Right now, drummer and producer Mitch Dorge might be working on one of his many ongoing projects with Manitoba musicians – as a producer or as a musician.

Or, he could be composing soundtrack music as he does in his work with Farpoint Films – such as for the CITY-TV/OLN series Escape Or Die, starring Dean Gunnarson.

He might even be out across Canada collecting more frequent flier points than the average flight attendant team at WestJet with his motivational project for kids Mitch Dorge: In Your Face And Interactive, run in conjunction with The Co-Operators.

That might sound like a pretty comprehensive workload with just those involvements, but knowing Mitch, those are all but a handful of spokes in an ever-evolving activity wheel for the former drummer of The Crash Test Dummies. He also happens to be the recently-awarded 2016 recipient of the Sir Hugh John Macdonald Memorial Award – for his aforementioned work with kids in schools.

The press release from Farpoint Films brought the latter to my attention, forwarded on by Dorge. That reads:

“Dorge, a composer and sound editor at Farpoint Films, will be presented the award at the MacDonald Youth Services Spring Event in May 2016 for his work speaking to youths about making positive choices.

MYS presents the award annually to a member of the community that best demonstrates the values and virtues of Sir Hugh John Macdonald. The recipient must demonstrate the values of respect and fairness towards youth, and offers practical assistance to help youth develop life skills.”

To quote Dorge’s reaction, ““I’m usually not big on awards but this acknowledgment comes from a different place. It’s not about sales or a subjective art form. It’s somebody saying: ‘We think you’ve made a difference in someone’s life. Thank you. Please continue to do so.”
